বুখারী শরীফ হচ্ছে বিশুদ্ধতম হাদীস সংকলন। মহানবী (সা)-এর পবিত্র মুখনিঃসৃত বাণী, তাঁর কর্ম এবং মৌন সমর্থন ও অনুমােদন হচ্ছে হাদীস বা সুন্নাহ। পবিত্র কুরআনের ব্যাখ্যা এবং শরীয়তের বিভিন্ন হুকুম-আহকাম ও দিকনির্দেশনার জন্য সুন্নাহ হচ্ছে দ্বিতীয় উৎস। প্রকৃতপক্ষে পবিত্র কুরআন ও হাদীস উভয়ই ওহী দ্বারা প্রাপ্ত। কুরআন হচ্ছে আল্লাহর কালাম আর হাদীস হচ্ছে মহানবীর বাণী ও অভিব্যক্তি।
