About Westf. Kettenschmiedemuseum

Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of chains!

The Westphalian Chainsmith Museum is located in the former magazine building of the Himmelmann paper factory in Fröndenberg. Today you can marvel at machines and tools for making chains in the large machine hall. These were collected from various chain factories in North Rhine-Westphalia, restored and made functional again. A highlight of the exhibition is an original forge fire with a so-called “transmission system”. It comes from the Ruhrland chain factory Wilhelm Prünte and is still used today for demonstration purposes.

With the chain app you can take topic-specific tours through the Westphalian Chainsmith Museum Fröndenberg. Find out everything about the complex production of round steel chains in pre-industrial times in the machine hall. Experience how industrialization significantly simplified chain production. Get to know different types of chains and their areas of application and find out about the industrial history of the Westphalian “chain town” Fröndenberg from its beginnings to the present day.
In addition to a predetermined thematic tour, the app also offers you the opportunity to explore the museum based on your interests.

Note: You can either download the app completely before your visit and use offline mode in the museum in Fröndenberg or stream the content directly on site via the museum WiFi. Please use headphones in the museum.
