The first National Women’s Day celebrations were held on 28 February 1909 in the United States to commemorate the year before the New York garment workers strike against poor working conditions. In 1910, the Socialist International in Copenhagen, established around the world celebrated Women’s Day, which had used the idea of promoting women’s rights and to build public support for universal suffrage for women. The conference was attended by over 100 participants from 17 countries. Establishment of Women’s Day was adopted by an anonymous vote, without setting a precise date for the event.

In sixty years the United Nations participated in the development of international policies, standards, programs and objectives to promote raising the status of women.
