Area is a quantity that describes the size or extent of a two-dimensional figure or shape in a plane. It can be visualized as the amount of paint that would be necessary to cover a surface, and is the two-dimensional counterpart of the one-dimensional length of a curve, and three-dimensional volume of a solid. The standard unit of area in the International System of Units (SI) is the square meter, or m2. Provided below are equations for some of the most common simple shapes, and examples of how the area of each is calculated.

rectangle: a plane figure with four straight sides and four right angles, especially one with unequal adjacent sides, in contrast to a square.

triangle: a plane figure with three straight sides and three angles

trapezoid: a quadrilateral with no sides parallel.

circle: a round plane figure whose boundary (the circumference) consists of points equidistant from a fixed point (the centre).

sector: he plane figure enclosed by two radii of a circle or ellipse and the arc between them.

ellipse: a regular oval shape, traced by a point moving in a plane so that the sum of its distances from two other points (the foci) is constant, or resulting when a cone is cut by an oblique plane which does not intersect the base.

parallelogram: a four-sided plane rectilinear figure with opposite sides parallel.
