Nineteen Eighty-Four is a dystopian novel by George Orwell published in 1949. The novel is set in Airstrip 1 (formerly Great Britain), a province of a superpower called Oceania, in a restless world. War, government censorship, and manipulation of the masses. This province is under the yoke of a political system that falsely calls itself English Socialism (according to Newspeak, the new language invented by the government), and is controlled by an inner-party elite that pursues individualism and free thought as thought crimes. Big Brother embodies the tyranny of the regime, and he is a leader who rules as a leader to whom the truth does not come from before him or behind him, even if there is a possibility that he does not exist. The party seeks power for nothing but its own sake, not for the benefit of others. As for the novel's hero, Winston Smith, he is a member of the Outer Party and an employee of the Ministry of Truth, which is responsible for propaganda and revision of history. His job is to rewrite old articles and change historical facts so that they are consistent with what the party has always declared. In 2003, it reached eighth place in a poll conducted by the British Broadcasting Corporation. "Nineteen Eighty-Four" is a classic political satire and dystopian science fiction. Since its publication in 1949, many of its terms and concepts have been commonly used in the English language, such as Big Brother, Double Mind, Criminal Mind, Newspeak, Room 10, 2+2= 5, Forgetfulness. “Nineteen Eighty-Four” popularized the adjective “Orwellian,” which is used to describe a dictatorship or tyranny of official deception, secret surveillance and alteration of history. In 2005, this book was named one of the 100 best English novels from 1923 to 2005 by Time Magazine, and was included in the 100 Greatest English Novels of the Twentieth Century in 1998 (Readers' Vote: No. 6, No. 13 by Editorial Team).
