The ASG based IF-VIG is a tool that aims to quantify frailty and geriatric syndromes (GS) in elderly patients.
Frailty is a multidimensional entity, which is defined as a state of vulnerability to stressful factors, and is conditioned by the limitation of compensatory mechanisms that place the person in a situation of high risk for poor health outcomes. Under the conceptual framework of K. Rockwood's cumulative model of deficits, to quantify the frailty of patients in our environment, the frailty index IF-VIG (frailty index based on the comprehensive geriatric assessment VGI) has been developed, an instrument which is still a quantified VGI. The IF-VIG index has proven to be a simple tool (with respect to content), fast (in administration time), with discriminative capacity (in situational diagnosis) and predictive (with high correlation with mortality). The IF-VIG contemplates the assessment of different domains: functional, nutritional, cognitive, emotional, social status, acute symptoms, presence of chronic diseases and some geriatric syndromes.
The identification of SG is one of the quality challenges in care for the elderly. There is a close relationship between SG, frailty and mortality and the occurrence of SG is a direct indicator of frailty. Early detection and multidisciplinary intervention in people with initial frailty can reverse the onset of SG. The screening of SG will help us to predict the possible potential problems at the functional, mental and social level in an individualized way, as well as to better plan the necessary resources.
