Rare phonk music is a hip hop production style developed in the early to mid 2010s by DJ Smokey, a Canadian DJ and producer that will remain the main frontman and most popular artist in the genre even as it further develops. The rare phonk mostly includes drum programming and rhythms borrowed from 2010s trap music styles, which he often mixes with the aforementioned percussion sounds and rap vocal samples, and less prominently with lo-fi hip hop. Jazz samples and downtempo shades are also not uncommon. Some other forms of electronic music are sometimes present, in addition to influences and samples from other forms of classical hip hop.
