About Bisbi: who sees your screen

Someone reading your screen over your shoulder is the kind of thing you only find out about after you have already been read. The password you typed on the bus, the chat on the train, the offer open on the laptop in the next seat. Bisbi uses the front camera to notice it as it happens and warn you first.

HOW IT WORKS

A small dot sits on your screen, on top of any app, and changes colour with what the front camera sees:

• Green - nobody looking, all clear
• Amber - someone showed up near you
• Red - someone's face is turned towards your screen

The dot is a control, not decoration: tap it to open Bisbi, and drag it to choose where it sits on screen - the spot is remembered. In settings you change its size and all three colours.

For the dot to be drawn you need to grant the Display over other apps permission, which Bisbi asks for the first time, with an explanation. Without it detection still runs and warns you through the notification, but the dot is not drawn.

You do not need to keep Bisbi open to follow along.

THE IMAGE NEVER LEAVES YOUR DEVICE

In a privacy app this is the only part that truly matters. Face detection runs inside your phone, using a model that ships with the app itself. Camera frames are analysed in memory and discarded in the same instant.

No photo goes to any server. Nothing is written to disk unless you turn on intruder capture yourself - and even then the photo stays in the app's private storage, on your device. Bisbi works in airplane mode.

The app does not recognise who you are either. There is no biometric measurement, no face enrolment, no account, no login, no email to type in.

BUILT NOT TO EAT YOUR BATTERY

In an app like this the cost is in analysing the image, not in keeping the camera open. So Bisbi only calls the face detector when the scene actually changes: it compares a tiny signature of the frame and, with the phone resting on a table or in a pocket, it does not run the model for nothing. When the screen goes off, the camera is closed.

PREMIUM

The subscription removes ads and unlocks two features:

• Intruder capture - a photo of the moment of the alert, saved only on your device
• Auto dimming - the screen dims by itself while someone is looking

Weekly, monthly and yearly plans, billed through Google Play, renewing automatically and cancellable at any time in your Play Store account.

ABOUT WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

Bisbi is a help, not a guarantee. Distance, lighting, angle and how the phone is held all affect the result, and a face in profile, far away or in the dark can slip through. Do not use Bisbi as the only protection for sensitive information.

PERMISSIONS, AND WHY EACH ONE

• Camera - it is the sensor behind the detection. Without it there is no way to work.
• Display over other apps - what lets the dot appear on top of other apps.
• Notifications - the status notice with the stop button.
