Volbrecht Nagel (1867–1921) was a German missionary to the Malabar coast of India. He wrote many songs and hymns in Malayalam that are sung even today by all Christian denominations. Nagel is regarded with great esteem by the Malayalee Christian community for all his work in bringing the Gospel to Kerala.

Nagel's mother tongue was German. He became fluent in Malayalam and composed hymns in that language, which are still used in church services.

മലയാളത്തിലുള്ള നിരവധി ക്രിസ്തീയ കീർത്തങ്ങളുടെ രചയിതാവായ ഒരു ജർമ്മൻ വൈദികൻ ആണ് വോൾബ്രീറ്റ് നാഗൽ (Volbreet Nagel). നാഗൽ സായിപ്പ് എന്ന പേരിൽ ആണു ഇദ്ദേഹം കേരള ക്രൈസ്തവരുടെ ഇടയിൽ അറിയപ്പെട്ടിരുന്നത്. വി. നാഗൽ എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. ജനനം 1867 നവംബർ 3നു ജർമ്മനിയിലെ ഹാസൻ എന്ന നഗരത്തിൽ. മരണം 1921 മെയ് 12-നു ജർമ്മനിയിൽ.

ഇപ്പോൾ കേരളക്രൈസ്തവർ സാധാരണ ശവസംസ്കാരശുശ്രൂഷയുടെ സമയത്ത് സമയമാം രഥത്തിൽ ഞാൻ സ്വർഗ്ഗയാത്ര ചെയ്യുന്നു എന്നാരംഭിക്കുന്ന പ്രശസ്ത കീർത്തനത്തിന്റെ രചയിതാവ് വി. നാഗൽ ആണ്. പിന്നീട് 21 ഭാഷകളിലേക്ക് മൊഴിമാറ്റം ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ട ഗാനത്തിന്റെ പ്രശസ്തി മലയാളത്തിനപ്പുറത്തേക്കും വളരുകയായിരുന്നു. അരനാഴികനേരം എന്ന സിനിമയിൽ കേട്ടതോടെയാണു സമയരഥത്തിന്റെ ഗാനം മലയാളത്തിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായത്.

ജര്‍മ്മന്‍ മിഷണറിയായ വി. നാഗല്‍ നൂറോളം മലയാള ഗാനങ്ങളും അനേകം ലേഖനങ്ങളും എഴുതി. അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെഗാനങ്ങള്‍ നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകള്‍ക്കു ശേഷവും കേരളീയര്‍ ഇന്നും ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നു.

കേരളീയരെ സ്വന്തം സ്വസഹോദരീ സഹോദരങ്ങള്‍ ആയി കണ്ട നാഗല്‍ മലയാള ഭാഷയെ സ്വന്തം ഭാഷയായും കരുതി. മലയാള ഭാഷക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം നല്‍കിയ സംഭാവനകള്‍ ഒരു കേരളീയനും വിസ്മരിക്കാവതല്ല.

സഭാ വ്യത്യാസം കൂട്ടാതെ ധാരാളം കേരള ക്രൈസ്തവര്‍ ഇന്നും അദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ ഗാനങ്ങള്‍ പാടി ആസ്വദിക്കുന്നു. ദുഖത്തില്‍ ആശ്വാസം പകരുന്നവയും, സ്തോത്ര ഗീതങ്ങളും, ക്രിസ്തുവിന്‍റെ രണ്ടാം വരവിനെ പ്രകീർത്തിക്കുന്നതുമായവയാണ് അവയില്‍ നല്ല പങ്കും. “എന്നിലുദിക്കണമെ ക്രിസ്തേശുവേ, നീ കൂടെപ്പര്‍ക്ക എന്നേശു രാജനെ, നിന്നോട് പ്രാര്‍ഥിപ്പാന്‍ പ്രീയ പിതാവേ വന്ന നിന്‍ മക്കളെ ചെവിക്കൊണ്ടാലും, ഗോല്‍ഗോത്തായിലെ കുഞ്ഞാടെ” ഇവ അവയില്‍ ചിലത് മാത്രമാണ്. പ്രസിദ്ധിയോ ജനപ്രീതിയോ സമ്പത്തോ മോഹിക്കാതെ ത്യാഗ സമ്പന്നമായൊരു ജീവിതം നയിച്ച ആ ഭാവനാശാലി ഒരു നല്ല ഗായകന്‍ കൂടി ആയിരുന്നു.

കേരളത്തിൽ വന്നു മിഷനറി പ്രവർത്തനം ലക്‌ഷ്യമാക്കി നാഗൽ സായിപ്പ് മലയാളം പഠിച്ചു എന്നു മാത്രമല്ല അതിൽ പ്രാവീണ്യം ഉള്ളവനുമായി തീരുകയും ചെയ്തു. ചെറുപ്പം മുതൽ തന്നെ പാട്ടുകൾ ഈണത്തിൽ പാടാനും ജർമ്മൻ ഭാഷയിൽ കൊച്ചു കൊച്ചു ഗാനങ്ങൾ എഴുതാനും നാഗൽ സായിപ്പ് താത്പര്യംപ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നുവെന്ന് പറയപ്പെടുന്നു. ഈ വാസന മലയാള ഗാനരചനയ്ക്ക് അദ്ദേഹം ഉപയോഗിച്ചു. തനിക്ക് പ്രിയങ്കരങ്ങളായ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് രാഗങ്ങൽ അവലംബിച്ച് ഉപദേശ നിഷ്ഠയിൽ ആശയ സമ്പുഷ്ടതയോടെ ഭക്തി സംവർദ്ധകങ്ങളായ ഒട്ടേറെ ഗാനങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം രചിച്ചു. അതൊക്കെ ഇപ്പോൾ സഭാവ്യത്യാസം കൂടാതെ കേരള ക്രൈസ്തവർ അവരുടെ ആരാധനകളിൽ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു.
