The history of Pakistan encompasses the history of the region constituting modern Pakistan. Before achieving independence in 1947, the territory of modern Pakistan was a part of the British Indian Empire. Prior to that it was ruled in different periods by local kings and numerous imperial powers. The ancient history of the region comprising present-day Pakistan also includes some of the oldest of the names of empires of South Asia and some of its major civilizations.

In the 19th century, the land was incorporated into British India. Pakistan's political history began in 1906 with the birth of the All India Muslim League, established in opposition to the Indian National Congress party which it accused of failing to protect "Muslim interests, amid neglect and under-representation." On 29 December 1930, philosopher Sir Muhammad Iqbal called for an autonomous new state in "northwestern India for Indian Muslims". The League rose in popularity through the late 1930s. Muhammad Ali Jinnah espoused the Two Nation Theory and led the League to adopt the Lahore Resolution[7] of 1940, demanding the formation of independent states in the East and the West of British India. Eventually, a successful movement led by Jinnah resulted in the partition of India and independence from Britain, on 14 August 1947.

تاریخ پاکستان یا پاکستان کی تاریخ سے مراد اُس خطے کی تاریخ ہے جو 1947ء کو تقسیم ہند کے موقع پر ہندوستان سے الگ ہو کر اسلامی جمہوریہ پاکستان کہلایا۔ تقسیم ہند سے قبل موجودہ پاکستان کا خطہ برطانوی راج کا حصہ تھا۔ اُس سے قبل اس خطے پر مختلف ادوار میں مختلف مقامی بادشاہوں اور متعدد غیر ملکی طاقتوں کا راج رہا۔ قدیم زمانے میں یہ خطہ برصغیر ہند کی متعدد قدیم ترین مملکتوں اور چند بڑی تہذیبوں کا حصہ رہا ہے۔ 18 ویں صدی میں سرزمین برطانوی ہند میں ڈھل گئی۔

پاکستان کی سیاسی تاریخ کا آغاز 1906ء میں آل انڈیا مسلم لیگ کے قیام سے ہوتا ہے۔ اس جماعت کے قیام کا مقصد ہندوستان میں بسنے والے مسلمانوں کے مفاد کا تحفظ اور اُن کی نمائندگی کرنا تھا۔ 29 دسمبر 1930ء کو فلسفی و شاعر، ڈاکٹر سر علامہ محمد اقبال نے جنوب مشرقی ہندوستان کے مسلمانوں کے لیے ایک خود مختار ریاست کا تصور پیش کیا۔[حوالہ درکار] 1930ء کی دہائی کے اواخر میں مسلم لیگ نے مقبولیت حاصل کرنا شروع کی۔1933 میں اس کا نام چوہدری رحمت علی گجر نے تجویز کیا اور خاکہ بنایا جس میں مختلف علاقوں کو ملا کر پاکستان کا ایک نقشہ کھینچا۔ محمد علی جناح کی جانب سے دو قومی نظریہ پیش کیے جانے اور مسلم لیگ کی جانب سے 1940ء کی قرارداد لاہور کی منظوری نے پاکستان کے قیام کی راہ ہموار کی۔ قرارداد لاہور میں مطالبہ کیا گیا تھا کہ برطانوی ہند کے مسلم اکثریتی علاقوں پر مشتمل آزاد ریاستیں قائم کی جائیں۔ بالآخر قائد اعظم محمد علی جناح کی قیادت میں ایک کامیاب تحریک کے بعد 14 اگست 1947ء کو برطانوی تسلط سے آزادی ملی اور تقسیم ہند عمل میں آئی۔
