The concept of the Turkish World defines a vast geography in terms of its historical and cultural roots and the Turkish people living in this geography, united around common values ​​such as language, history, culture, art and literature, and thus developing a common identity and sense of belonging. This concept encompasses a vast area, a cultural basin, extending from Central Asia to Anatolia, from the Caucasus to the Balkans and from Siberia to the Middle East.

The Atatürk Research Center Presidency, realizing the importance of the Turkish World in our age, began preparations for two works, Turkish States and Turkish Statesmen, in 2013 within its own area of ​​responsibility. In the later stages of the study, the idea of ​​publishing the works in digital media came to the fore in order to reach a wider audience by taking advantage of the opportunities provided by technology. Subsequently, it was decided to launch a digital Turkish World Encyclopedia and contacts were established with distinguished academics in their fields and articles were started to be written.

The aim of the Turkish World Encyclopedia is to include states established in geographies bearing the traces of Turkish civilization, important personalities raised, events that occurred, culture and civilization built, in short, the rich historical accumulation in the Turkish geography/world. The main purpose of the study is to develop a common perspective on Turkish history, historical personalities and events in the Turkish World in the 21st century. The Encyclopedia Articles have been prepared in order to provide information on Personalities, States, Places, Events and Facts based on primary and reliable sources, and special importance has been given to addressing the issue from the Turkish World perspective in the articles.

The Encyclopedia consists of 9 subcategories titled “Turkish States”, Statesmen”, “History and Culture”, “Turkish Communities”, “Language and Literature”, “Geography and Place”, Science and Art”, “Pioneer Women in the Turkish World” and “Intellectuals and Thinkers”.

The Encyclopedia will start its publication life on December 31, 2024, with some of its articles written in Azerbaijani Turkish. Thanks to the updates and ease of access provided by the digital format, the content of the Encyclopedia will be regularly enriched and kept up-to-date.

The Atatürk Research Center Presidency will continue its work with the responsibility of sharing a second digital encyclopedia with the public and being one of the pioneering institutions of the digital encyclopedia after four years since the digital publication of the Atatürk Encyclopedia on October 29, 2020.

The Encyclopedia, which was prepared with the aim of creating a common memory of the Turkish World, transferring it to future generations and strengthening cultural ties, has been presented to the benefit of researchers and readers as planned. In this context, we would like to thank the authors and reviewers of the Encyclopedia articles, the members of the Turkish World Working Group, the former administrators of ATAM and the experts of the High Institution, their staff and those who contributed.
