The novel Forgetting com, written by Ahlam Mosteghanemi, this book by the famous writer who is ranked among the ten most influential women in the Arab world, and the first in the field of literature to have sales of her books exceeding two million and three hundred thousand copies, is a women’s inventory against masculinity, in defense of masculinity, that family in which we boast. In her temptation, because without her we would not be females or women.
In her beautiful, direct, and clear eloquent language, the writer expresses existing, realistic, and sensory facts, of which she does not imagine anything. In fact, sometimes the details of her actual reality may exceed the limits of any broad imagination, and then she arrives at results, conclusions, statements, judgments, and advice, no matter how different opinions are in their impact, effect, and wisdom, and no matter how diverse the responses are. Action on it, its source is honest and rich and stems from experience and field curiosity far removed from theorizing and theory, revealing with bright flashlights all the angles and secrets of what is going on in the squares of real vast spaces.
The writer complains about the disappearance of the masculinity of “men,” which means the disappearance of all the good moral and romantic qualities that women seek from them. So how can salvation be found for a woman in her love for a man? You find a solution for her, advise her, and pray to her: Love him as you would not love a woman, and forget him as men forget. She does not yearn to identify with unloving men, in their current denouncing image, so let the woman remain her original nature in her love and affection for the man, and only learn how to be like men in forgetting.
The author mentions many poets, philosophers, and writers, and cites their sayings and conversations that strengthen and enrich her topic: The number of writers who, across times and civilizations and in all languages, have served as emotional guides to lovers lost in the alleys and side streets of love, cannot be counted. I do not make this claim. I am just a nurse who only has a first aid kit to stop the bleeding of female hearts during separation. In the end, forgetting is nothing but turning a page from the book of a lifetime, but the weight of the page may be so heavy that the writer finds herself a role in lightening this weight as much as she can, and even turning the page on behalf of the reader. She says with humility and a noble practical goal: Let me try, maybe I can turn this page of yours. Because it is easier to turn the page on others.
