About this game

You are a lone outsider in a strange, non-Euclidean world.. As a Rogue, your goal is to collect as many treasures as possible. However, collecting treasures attracts dangerous monsters (on the other hand, killing the monsters allows more treasures to be generated).

Collecting enough treasure also allows you to find rare magical orbs, which grant you one-time or time-limited special abilities.

The world is a combination of eleven types of lands. Each land type has specific style (monsters, treasure, magical orbs, terrain features). Collecting treasures only attracts more monsters in lands of the same type, so you can try to collect lots of treasure in several different lands! Ultimately, you will be able to access Hell, and look for the fabulous Orbs of Yendor which are hidden there.

The game is inspired by the roguelike genre (you are not allowed to save as the game is short enough and reloading the same saved file several times would be cheating), as well as puzzle games such as DROD (Deadly Rooms of Death). HyperRogue is one of just few games played on a hyperbolic plane.

Play HyperRogue for free, or download HyperRogue Gold, which includes online achievements and leaderboards (via Google Games Services), and is updated more frequently (more lands with unique mechanics, and other features). If you want a small app, download HyperRogue Lite without music. Also play the desktop version of HyperRogue!

I want so badly to like this game, but the usability issues make it almost unplayable. The menus are awful, and the UI constantly misplaces a tap, which is an incredibly frustrating reason to lose a round. Shame, because the idea is genius and I really wanted to buy the paid version. Edit: it also crashes a lot. That's more understandable given how complex the game is, but a save/load system would help make that less painful.

Thanks for the review! There is a "casual mode" in special modes, which enables you to save/load on collecting an Orb of Safety.

I love the concept. But exploring the concept is impossible if the most basic of state saving does not happen. No modern game should reset to the beginning if you receive a phone call or your screen turns off for a second. Even dreck games showing ads every five seconds have this figured out; please raise your standards to at least this level and I'll give you the five stars I desperately want to give.

Thanks for the review! The issue you mention (crash on phone call / screen turning off) should hopefully be fixed in 12.0v. (HyperRogue has a feature to keep the progress in case when you switch to another app, but sometimes newer versions of Android introduce changes which causes this feature to crash the game instead :/)

First, I'll parrot most other reviews. I got a text, so I clicked on it and replied. Went back to the game and was dumped into the first zone with nothing. I lost much progress. I have zero interest in playing any longer. Maybe I'll go pirate it (temporarily) on PC and pretend I'm playing the actually free Android version. Second, neat game. Loads of places to explore with interesting mechanics, both environmentally and via the monsters. I look forward to playing more. 3 stars until fixed.

What's new

This is HyperRogue version 13.0a. Mostly lots of bugfixes to 13.0.

Fixed some bugs with crossbow and high-FOV modes, the Curse of Fatigue has a positive, changed one Prince(ss) message, better button placement on Android, and more!
