About this app

Frederick lets speakers of ANY language learn to read, spell and pronounce English through play, all in English! No translating or memorizing!

Because traditional lessons can be boring, confusing and ineffective, many students struggle to become confident readers and speakers.

So, Frederick lets learners teach themselves to read and speak English in two simple steps:

First, you compare letter combinations to develop reading skills, pronunciation and listening. Even non-native English learners can understand with pictures instead of translations.

Then, fun games let you review what you learn in different ways. So you build confidence and fluency, automatically.

Frederick teaches PHONICS (the rules of pronunciation), and SIGHT WORDS (words that break pronunciation rules). All 44 sounds of English are covered across more than 2,000 words, from the alphabet to advanced words and full sentences.

There’s a “Word Bank” where you can see all of the words you’ve found. You can also unlock all levels and modes with “Teacher Mode." This enables learners to start at the right level for their ability.

Frederick works offline, and you can easily track progress with word counters and rewards!

The first 3 levels are free:

the alphabet (Aa, Ba, Cc…)
short vowels and consonants (at, in, up…)
three-letter words (cat, bug, pig…)
Pay the one-time upgrade fee to get instant access to levels 4-35. (Upgrade within the first 30 minutes of using Frederick and get 75% off)

Frederick is perfect for:

Adult English language learners who want to understand the rules of spelling and pronunciation so they can quickly reduce their accent and understand natives more easily.

Beginning English learners who want to learn all in English so they become able to speak.

Teachers and parents (even those with NO EXPERIENCE teaching reading) who want a simple, natural and fun way to teach kids or adults to read, spell and pronounce English. There are no confusing instructions in Frederick. There’s also no “system” to learn, so even a two-year-old can improve with Frederick!

My kid is easily bored with most of the kid phonics apps. The quality here is amazing! I love hearing him sounding out words and popping those bubbles. I appreciate that there are few different games to practice with. The wheel spinning is sometimes very difficult to get it to be stopped on the intended letters. I do wish there was some control over the words used, timer length, or word count in a round. Some of the words are not words to encourage young child to learn!

Thanks so much for the feedback, Cherie! We're releasing the app in stages, so multi-accounts, and customization like timer length are coming soon. For the wheel, just tap the letters to make them "snap" to the middle. The nonsense words will help your son recognize these sounds in longer words. Please recommend Frederick to other parents! :)

The game doesn't necessarily check your phonetic knowledge like asking you to differentiate "bag" from "beg." (Or the intent just isn't there). Usually, it's too easy to because it gives you completely differently sounding words to choose from. Also, it would be nice if it had a free trial considering the fairly high price tag. But I appreciate the effort to gamify studying pronunciations or English in overall

Thanks for trying it! The first three levels are free. Games are random, so you get random words. But you can test understanding of pairs (bag vs. beg) in the explore modes. Imagine how a word might sound, then compare with what you hear. Or, close your eyes, spin the wheels, hear, then spell. You won't find a better way to do this with phonics. :)

I found Frederick via a video about Duolingo ABC. A good learning method and bubble game was great for awhile, but my little tester (4yrs 3m) found the interface tricky and stopped playing too quickly. She found the puzzle game frustrating because the pieces don't nicely flick into place. The letters on rollers are fiddly, it isn't easy to move one-at-a-time, make them turn more slowly. The illustration is good, but should have gender variety. Stick men look like boys and men.

Thanks for the feedback, Alex! We're actually building a tutorial right now to teach how the app works. The wheels can be tapped to make letters snap into place. And in the app as a whole, you'll find a variety stick figures. The icons are simple so even non-natives can understand the vocabulary. Play it with her and you'll get more from it. :)

What's new
