Rio Grande do Sul (Portuguese pronunciation: /hiw ˈɡɾɐ̃ːdʒɪ dʊ ˈsuw/) is one of the 27 federative units in Brazil. It is located in the South Region and is limited to the state of Santa Catarina to the north, Argentina to the west and Uruguay to the south, in addition to the Atlantic Ocean to the east. It is divided into 497 municipalities and its total area is 281,730.223 km², which is equivalent to 3.3% of the surface of Brazil, being little larger than Ecuador. Its capital is the municipality of Porto Alegre and its current governor is Eduardo Leite. The most populous cities are: Porto Alegre, Caxias do Sul, Canoas, Pelotas and Santa Maria. The relief consists of an extensive lowland, dominated to the north by a plateau. Antas, Uruguay, Taquari, Ijuí, Jacuí, Ibicuí, Pelotas and Camaquã are the main rivers. The climate is subtropical and the economy is based on agriculture (soybeans, wheat, rice and corn), livestock and industry (leather and footwear, food, textiles, wood, metallurgy and chemicals).
