Amapá is a state in northern Brazil that borders Suriname, French Guiana and the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon rainforest covers a large part of its area and the Oiapoque River forms part of its northern border. In the south, the capital, Macapá, is known for the São José de Macapá Fortress, located by the sea, an 18th-century Portuguese fort, and for the Marco Zero Monument, an obelisk that marks the equator.

The origin of the state's name is controversial. In the Tupi language, the name "Amapá" would mean "the place of rain" (ama, "rain" and paba, "place", "estancia", "abode"). According to tradition, however, the name would have come from nheengatu, meaning "land that ends" or "island".
