In 1865, the Compagnie des pasteurs de Genève commissioned the Protestant pastor and theologian Louis Segond to do a French translation of the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts of the Bible. In 1874 he delivered his first edition of his translation of the Old Testament.

The success of the project allows Louis Segond to begin the translation of the New Testament. The complete Segond Bible appeared for the first time in 1880 with enormous success, and it will become the reference Bible for French-speaking Protestants.
