A supercar also called an exotic car, is a loosely defined tour of the street-legal, high-performance, high-end sports car. Since the early 2000s or 2010s, the term hypercar has happened to be used frequently for the highest performance supercars. Supercars are often designed and marketed as the flagship model in a vehicle manufacturer's sports car lineup.

In the United States, muscle cars in the 1960s were often called "supercars".

The Lamborghini Miura has been manufactured between 1966 and 1973, is generally recorded as the first supercar.

It is also thought that the definition of a supercar is always subjective and a matter of blind bias.

In the 1960s, cars that were now considered muscle cars were then referred to as supercars. This term is sometimes spelled with a capital S. By 1966, the supercar of the sixties became an official industry standard. For example, the May 1965 production of the American magazine Car Life featured numerous references to supercars and a 1968 issue of Car. Driver magazine makes frequent mentions of the "Supercar street racer gang" market segment. The "S/C" in the model name of the AMC S/C Rambler is an abbreviation for "Super Car".

Since the fall of the muscle car in the 1970s, the word supercar has come to mean a vehicle in the mold of Lamborghini or Ferrari. Enthusiasts and less standard-looking vehicles have been modified for increased performance.

A newer term for high-performance sports cars is "supercar", which is sometimes used to describe the highest performance supercars. According to supercars, there is no definitive definition of what constitutes a hypercar. An attempt to define them is "the prevailing view that they can be made for limited production, premium supercar priced at around US$1 million or more.
