Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is located in eastern North America, between the US and Canada border, on the Niagara River. It consists of 3 large waterfalls. Horseshoe (Horseshoe Falls) is the largest of these. American Falls and Bridal Veils Fall are two other smaller waterfalls.

168,000 m³ of water flows from Niagara Falls in half a minute. Niagara, the largest waterfall in North America, is depressions caused by ice floes from the Arctic 10,000 years ago. The surrounding area of the falls is Niagara Falls Park and is naturally protected by its sister cities, Niagara Falls-Ontario and Niagara Falls-New York. It is thought that the name Niagara comes from the indigenous word "Onguiaahra" (plain).

Several hydroelectric power stations built by Nikola Tesla around the river generate electricity for both the USA and Canada. The activities that can be done around the waterfall are to watch the big cascade from Niagara Park and the rainbow created by the water flying into the air, to join the boat trips that go up to the bottom of the waterfall, to cross the Rainbow Bridge, which is considered the border, to the other country, or to shop at duty-free shops. Niagara Falls completely froze to ice in 1932.

The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is more developed than the American side. The waterfall is famous for boat tours.

Jean François "Blondin" Gravelet was the first person to cross Niagara Falls on June 30, 1859, and did it again eight times that year.
