About this app

Yosemite National Park is a national park located in Tuolumne, Mariposa, and Madera counties in central and eastern California, United States. The park on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range has an area of 3,081 km². The 18 km² Yosemite Valley is visited by 3.5 million people each year. Included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, the park features granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, and giant Sequoia trees. About 95% of Yosemite National Park has wildlife. Yosemite National Park contains suitable habitats for more than 160 rare plants, with rare local geologic formations and unique soils characterizing the restricted ranges many of these plants occupy. The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granitic rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form its relatively gentle western and more dramatic eastern slopes.

Yosemite National Park is located in California's Central Sierra Nevada. The road takes 3.5 hours for someone who wants to come to the park from San Francisco by car, 6 hours for someone who wants to go from Los Angeles, and 7 hours for someone who wants to come from San Bernardo. The park, the size of Rhode Island, has an area of 3,081 square kilometers. Parking and traffic at Yosemite National Park aren't as problematic in fall as during the summer season, though the traffic can thicken during the extended Columbus Day weekend.

Most visitors to Yosemite National Park either dine at their lodges or self-cater in campgrounds or in kitchen-equipped rooms. The one true destination restaurant is the hotel's semi-formal (at dinner) candlelit Ahwahnee Dining Room (reservations required at dinner: 209-372-1489).

Yosemite National Park was central to the development of the national park idea. Galen Clark and others lobbied to protect Yosemite Valley from development, ultimately leading to President Abraham Lincoln's signing the Yosemite Grant in 1864. John Muir led a successful movement to have Congress establish a larger national park by 1890, one which encompassed the valley and its surrounding mountains and forests, paving the way for the National Park System. Yosemite National Park now draws about four million visitors each year, and most visitors spend the majority of their time in the seven square miles (18 km2) of Yosemite Valley.
