The prayers that make up the Rosary are arranged in groups of ten Hail Mary's, called decades. Each decade is preceded by a Lord's Prayer and followed by a Glory Be. During the recitation of each series, one thinks of one of the Mysteries of the Rosary, which recalls the events in the lives of Jesus and Mary. Five decades are recited per rosary. Other sentences are sometimes added before or after each decade. Rosary beads are an aid to saying these prayers in the correct sequence.

The rosary begins on the short strand:

The sign of the cross on the crucifix;
The prayer "O Lord, open my lips; O God, come to my aid; O Lord, hasten to help me", still on the Crucifix;
The Apostles' Creed, still on the Crucifix;
The Lord's Prayer on the first large bead (for the intentions of the Pope and the needs of the Church);
The Hail Mary in each of the following three accounts (for the three theological virtues: faith, hope and charity); and
The glory is in the next big bead.
Then follows the prayer of the decades, repeating this cycle for each mystery:

Announce the mystery;
The Lord's Prayer on the big bill;
The Ave Maria in each of the ten small adjacent beads;
Glory Be in space before the next big bead; and
In conclusion:

La salve regina;
The litany of Loreto;
Any other intention; and
The sign of the cross

The Mysteries of the Rosary are meditations on episodes in the life and death of Jesus from the Annunciation to the Ascension and beyond, known as the Joyful Mysteries (or Joy), the Sorrowful Mysteries, and the Glorious Mysteries. Each of these mysteries contemplates five different stages in the life of Christ.

The 15 promises fall into the category of "private revelation", and as such are a pious tradition, that a person is free to believe or not believe.

Whoever serves me faithfully by reciting the Rosary will receive a sign of graces.
I promise my special protection and the greatest thanks to all who will recite the Rosary.
The Rosary will be a powerful armor against hell, it will destroy vice, diminish sin and defeat heresies.
He will make virtue and good works prosper; He will obtain for the souls the abundant mercy of God; it will withdraw the hearts of men from the love of the world and its vanities, and will lift them up to desire for eternal things. Oh, that souls be sanctified by this means.
The soul that is recommended to me by reciting the Rosary will not perish.
Whoever recites the Rosary with devotion, applying himself to the consideration of its sacred mysteries, will never be conquered or overwhelmed by misfortune. God will not punish him in his justice, he will not perish by a death not provided (not prepared for heaven). The sinner will be converted. The righteous will grow in grace and be worthy of eternal life.
Whoever has a true devotion to the Rosary will not die without the sacraments of the Church.
Those who are faithful to recite the Rosary will have, during their life and at the moment of their death, the light of God and the fullness of His graces; at the moment of death they will participate in the merits of the saints in paradise.
I will deliver the devotees of the rosary from purgatory.
The faithful children of the Rosary will deserve a high degree of glory in heaven.
