With this app you can find out more about people's lives and suffering stories at the Stolpersteine, which were laid in memory of the victims of National Socialism in Schleswig-Holstein.
Stolpersteine is a project by the artist Gunter Demnig that began in 1992. Small memorial plaques, so-called stumbling blocks, laid in the ground are intended to commemorate the fate of the people who were persecuted, murdered, deported, expelled or driven to suicide during the Nazi era.
People were also humiliated, persecuted and murdered in Schleswig-Holstein. In memory of many of these people, stumbling blocks were laid in front of the last freely chosen homes of the Nazi victims. A stumbling block contains the victim's name and year of birth, often the year of deportation, date of death and place of death.
Functions of the app: A stumbling block can be scanned with the camera of the mobile phone and the biography of the person being remembered can be retrieved.
Nearby stumbling blocks can be searched for and found using the app's location function.
The app also contains a memorial function. With the help of augmented reality, a candle can be placed on the stumbling block and supplemented with a memorial message and your own name. Other users of the app can then see these candles. The candles remain in virtual reality for a period of seven days.
Cleaning instructions for the stumbling blocks can also be found in the app.
The app initially contains all the stumbling blocks that have been laid in the cities of Kiel and Rendsburg. An expansion to the whole of Schleswig-Holstein is planned.
The app is a project of the Schleswig-Holstein State Commissioner for Civic Education and was implemented by the IT service provider dataport.
