Les Miserables (French: Les Misérables) is a novel by Victor Hugo published in 1862, and it is considered one of the most famous novels of the nineteenth century. In this book, he describes and criticizes social injustice in France between the fall of Napoleon in 1815 and the failed revolution against King Louis-Philippe in 1832. It is He writes in his introduction to the book: “Customs and laws in France create a social condition that is a kind of human hell. As long as there is indifference and poverty on earth, books like this will always be necessary.”

The novel depicts the lives of a number of French characters throughout the century that includes the Napoleonic Wars, and presents the nature of good, evil, and law in a captivating story in which the landmarks of Paris appear: morals, philosophy, law, justice, religion, and the nature of romance and family love. Victor Hugo was inspired by the criminal/policeman François Vidocq, but made that character two characters in his novel.

Les Misérables remains one of the masterpieces of international stories, due to the intensity of the raw emotion that the novel is full of and the art that defies any simple description. Its characters capture intense attention and remain entrenched in the mind, as the author himself predicted, and for the broad social and historical landscape.

The novel Les Misérables appeared on stage and screen through the play of the same name, and a film was also created for the same novel called Les Misérables (2012 film). It achieved huge sales to the point that its rating reached 7.6/10 and it won several awards.
