Ostriches are the largest birds in the world, both in terms of size and mass. Given that they are too large to fly, their feathers are instead used to help shade their young from the hot sun and to help attract females during the mating season.

Ostriches communicate by chirps, barks, honks, hissing, drumming, grunting and by booming. Booming is done by inflating its neck up to three times its normal size. Only males do this during the mating season.
