About this app

The Brahmavaivarta Purana is a massive Sanskrit scripture and one of the major Puranas of Hinduism. This is a Vaishnava scripture. The central characters of this Purana are Krishna and Radha. It is considered to be one of the most modern myths written in modern times.

A different text from the Brahmavaivarta Purana was probably prevalent in the late 1st millennium AD. However, the present-day text of this book was probably written in the Bengali region of the Indian subcontinent in the 15th or 16th century AD. It is probably refined in some part of South India. Many texts of this Purana are found. The number of chapters of this Purana is 264 or 26. All the texts are claimed to be part or manuscript of Brahmavaivarta Purana or Brahmakaivarta Purana.

The feature of Brahmavaivarta Purana is that in this Purana Krishna is called the supreme God and Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, Ganesha etc. are mentioned as different forms of the same deity and incarnation of Krishna. Besides, in this Purana, Radha, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Savitri and other goddesses are mentioned as incarnations of nature. Some anecdotes from the Mahabharata and Devi Mahatmyam have also been added to this Purana. Another notable feature of the Brahmavaivarta Purana is that in this Purana, femininity has been glorified through Radha. This Purana, without distinguishing between men and women, says that all women are the supporting force of the creation of the universe, and that insulting a woman is tantamount to insulting Radha.

The mythological stories of the Brahmavaivarta Purana and the Bhagavata Purana have had a special impact on the Krishna-worshiping communities of Hinduism, such as Raslila and other dances and arts.
