Varaždin County

Varaždin County is one of the oldest Croatian counties, and it was mentioned as early as 1181 in the charter of the Croatian-Hungarian King Bela III. Toma II stands out in the history of Varaždin County. Erdődy, who was the first hereditary grand prefect of Varaždin County. He received this honor because he proved himself in the fight against the Ottomans, so the king, along with the honor of inheriting the post of great prefect, also gifted him the Varaždin fortress, today's Old Town, in 1607. Descendants of Tom II. Erdődy lived in the Old Town until 1925, when the Old Town became a museum.

The golden age of Varaždin County is the second half of the 18th century, when Varaždin County is the center of events and state power, and the Croatian Parliament sits in the county's territory as many as 30 times. At that time, numerous castles, manors, chapels, churches, palaces, and even the County Palace, which is still the seat of the prefect, were built. The county palace was created in the time of Queen Maria Theresa, more than 250 years ago, and the official coat of arms and banner were created at that time, taking over the coat of arms of the Erdődy family. Today, Varaždin County is one of the smaller but most densely populated Croatian counties, consisting of 22 municipalities and 6 cities.
