Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Hasan Ali bin Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri, who is known as Ibn al-Jawzi

Enjoy reading Ibn al-Jawzi's book, Taqweem al-Lunsu, with the best application for books and stories, without the Internet, and many other features

Ibn al-Jawzi says in the introduction to the book, “I saw many of those affiliated with knowledge speak with the words of the common people who are rejected by them, according to their habit, and far from the knowledge of Arabic. What the common folk tune in to, some of them fall short, and some of them reject what is not appropriate to respond to, so I saw that I elect from those who favor that which pervades the affliction, without what is abnormal in its use and is rare, and I reject from error what is hardly hidden.

And know that the common people’s mistakes vary: sometimes they include the broken, sometimes they break the joined, and sometimes they extend the maqsour, and sometimes they shorten the extended, and sometimes they stress the abbreviated, and sometimes they lighten the stressful, and sometimes they add to the word, and sometimes they take away from it, and sometimes they include it in a wrong place. To other sections, and I had resolved to make a chapter for each of this, then I saw that I would organize all in one wire and bring it to the letters of the dictionary, and I rely on the right letter in it, not on the wrong one, as that is easier to request the word. This book of mine is a compilation of the books of scholars in Arabic, such as al-Farra’ and al-Asma’i.

The book is divided into chapters from the letter A to Yaa, and the reason behind writing it was that the author saw that everyone was speaking in their regular dialects of speech in one dialect, with no difference between the elite and the general public, and he saw the statement of linguistic correctness in what they made mistakes scattered in the linguistic books and its collection weighing on the lazy. And he saw that those who were familiar with what the common people composed did not achieve the desired purpose, so he presented us with this book and arranged it according to the letters of the alphabet, and made for every war a chapter, and placed the words in the chapters on the basis of correct warfare, not error, and divided the errors into types to show that he had intended to make a chapter for each of them had he not been He preferred the alphabetical arrangement, which is a dictionary for correcting and correcting the widespread and common errors among the people’s tongues. In it, Ibn al-Jawzi collected the errors that people fall into in a short and easy manner.

- I had an urgent question: How was the speech of the common people in ancient times in their daily lives? Did they speak Arabic? How was the extent of their deviation from the standard language that is in the books? So the answer to my question became clear to me: “These people speak words like a fool.” And in our time, this eloquent one of us is not close to the Arabic language for the common people of those ages.
Muhammad Shalaby

❇️ Some quotes from Ibn al-Jawzi's book Taqweem al-Lunsu ❇️

You say: I wrote this book on the first day of such-and-such month, or the first day of such-and-such month, and the common folk say: I wrote it at the beginning of such-and-such month, and that is wrong, because the day is not the beginning, because the crescent is seen at night.

You say to the one who is driven by the wind: “Abu Rayah” and the common people say: “Buryah”

This “beetle” is in the mudd without a “ha” and “the beetle”.

It is “the lid of the eye” and “the lid of the sword,” by opening the gym, and the common people break it.
