About this app

Synodal translation is an established term denoting the translation of the books of Holy Scripture into Russian, carried out during the 19th century and approved by the Most Holy Governing Synod for home (not liturgical) reading. The first text of the Synodal Translation (only the Four Gospels) was published in 1819. The full text of the Synodal Translation of the Bible was published in 1876.

The Synodal translation contains all the books of the Church Slavonic Elizabethan Bible: 50 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament. The translation of 39 canonical books of the Old Testament was carried out from the Hebrew (Masoretic text) with some account of the Septuagint and the Church Slavonic text. Ten non-canonical books are translated from Greek, but one (the 3rd book of Ezra) is translated from the Latin Vulgate. The translation of the New Testament was made from the Greek original according to the Elzivir edition, known as the Textus Receptus, taking into account the data of the manuscripts known by that time (primarily in those cases when they confirmed the discrepancies between the Church Slavonic text and the Textus Receptus).
