Since the gospel is the power of God to save man from
sin (Romans 1:16), it is important that we begin our
study with a brief overview of the problem of sin before examining the
God prepared for us in Christ. It's only in
the context of the total state of sin and depravity of the man that
the gospel of Christ takes on all its meaning. The gospel, when it is
accepted and applied to our lives, can be defined by the formula: "No
me, but Christ "(Galatians 2:20). This formula is expressed from
different ways in the New Testament (1 Corinthians 15.10;
Philippians 3.3, 8, 9).
The most difficult part of this formula, when it comes to putting it into
practical, is the first half: "Not me". It's because we,
human beings, fallen and sinners, are born egocentric by
nature and that our human tendency is, therefore, to live
independently of God (Romans 1.20-23). A fair understanding
the problem of sin is the only sure way to destroy all
self-confidence and turn to Christ as our
only justice, hope and assurance.
