The MRCS Part A exam consists of two papers, an AM paper and a PM paper, which are both taken on the same day. The AM paper is three hours in duration, while the PM paper is two hours long, making the exam a total of five hours. The exam is currently delivered via computer-based testing centers in partnership with Pearson Vue. In the MRCS Part A exam, you will be tested on generic surgical sciences and applied knowledge. The exam covers the core knowledge required in all nine specialties. Paper 1 focuses on applied basic sciences, while Paper 2 examines the principles of surgery in general. To pass Part A, you will need to demonstrate a minimum level of competence in each paper and achieve or exceed the pass mark set for the combined total mark. It's important to note that candidates are allowed a maximum of six attempts to pass Part A of the MRCS exam.
