Gombloh is a true ballad songwriter. He joined an art rock/orchestral rock group called Lemon Tree's Anno '69, whose music was influenced by ELP and Genesis. Leo Kristi and Franky Sahilatua were also members of this group.

The daily life of the common people is depicted in many of his songs, such as Refineries, Polygamy, Singing the Son of a Thief, Good Morning My City. Gombloh was also moved to write songs about (damaged) nature, one of which was News Weather (more popularly known as Lestari Alamku). His love songs tend to be "eccentric", much like the works of Iwan Fals or Doel Sumbang, for example Lepen ("small river" in Javanese, but here it stands for "short joke").

However, he has a distinctive theme, namely nationalism in his songs, such as Dewa Ruci, Autumn Flowers, Echoes of Mojokerto-Surabaya, Our Indonesia, My Indonesia, Your Indonesia, Message for My Country, and BK, a song that tells the story of Bung Karno, the proclaimer. His song Gebyar-Kebyar was sung a lot during the struggle for reform.

Together with Lemon Tree's, he has also released an album with songs in Javanese entitled "Sekar Mayang". Hong Wilaheng, which is a reprise version of the song Sekar Mayang and is included in the album "Berita Weather".

Gombloh also wrote songs for other singers. He wrote Longing Cry for Djatu Parmawati released (1988), also Merah Putih (1986) to be sung together.

Gombloh's songs were taken up in the research of Martin Hatch, a researcher from Cornell University, and written as a scientific paper entitled "Social Criticism in the Songs of 1980's Indonesian Pop Country Singers", which was presented at the music seminar of The Society of Ethnomusicology in Toronto, Canada. in 2000.

On March 30, 2005, at the peak of Indonesia Music Day III in Jakarta, Gombloh received the Nugraha Bhakti Musik Indonesia award posthumously from PAPPRI, along with nine other musical figures, namely: Gombloh, Nike Ardilla, Titiek Puspa, Anggun, Iwan Fals, Ebiet G Ade, Titiek Sandhora, Deddy Dores, Broery Marantika.
