Works perfectly in conjunction with the Quickstart that requested this app to be installed. It exposes measurements from a few sensors on the phone and sends telemetry data to a specially configured IoT Central app.

Is this supposed to work? QR scanning doesn't and I'm not foolish enough to try and type a connection string into a phone

Try MasterOfThings IoT Kit, much better and more mature application that simulates IoT devices.
