Bengali has developed over more than 1,300 years. Bengali literature, with its millennium-old literary history, was extensively developed during the Bengali Renaissance and is one of the most prolific and diverse literary traditions in Asia.

Bengali is a language spoken in Bengal: Bangladesh and parts of western India. Written in Bengali script, it is spoken by approximately 300 million native speakers. Bengali is also an official language in the West African nation of Sierra Leone, in honor of Bangladesh's role in UN peacekeeping efforts in that nation.
