About this app

getUBetter provides local digital self-management support for all common musculoskeletal injuries and conditions such as back, neck, or knee pain as well as pelvic floor health.

It is offered to patients free of change and provides content tailored by their local NHS clinical team.

The app aims to support patients in building trust in the own recovery, gaining a better understanding of when and where to seek help if necessary, and developing the confidence to manage potential future episodes.

The app is suitable for:
• People with any new, recurrent, or ongoing muscle or joint problem
• People over 18 years of age
• People who would benefit from self-management support
• In some areas of the NHS, you might be provided getUBetter to support pelvic floor dysfunction

The app is not suitable for:
• People under the age of 18 years of age
• People with severe, worsening symptoms where self-management is not advised by a clinician
• People with an injury or condition that requires regular physiotherapy or medical management e.g., after surgery or an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture
• People with worsening neurological symptoms (numbness, weakness, an unexplained new onset of bladder and bowel symptoms)
• People with a known diagnosis such as infection, rheumatological conditions, neurological problems, cancer, or fracture

How can I get started?

1. Your local Healthcare Provider (e.g., GP practice, Physio or Occupational Health service) will prescribe the app to you for a specific problem such as lower back pain, neck pain or knee pain (sometimes more than one)
2. You can also self-refer from your healthcare provider’s website
3. Register using the email you provided to your healthcare provider
4. Once you’ve registered, you will be automatically linked to your local region and can begin your recovery, prevention, and support journey.

I have found this little application extremely helpful. I have my connections to my General Practitioner and Physiotherapist in reality. This little app is quite a boost at moments in between. I am improving and certainly looking to other adventures which enables me to still participate. My experience of using this would be even more improved and motivational if we could join up with Google Fit or Strava or even some of the other apps available for low impact physical physiotherapy and recovery.

Hi Natasha, Glad our app is being helpful! It's so nice to hear it's allowing you to continue recovering even when you're not seeing your GP or physio. We love your idea of integrating with fitness apps for a better recovery journey. We'll explore this possibility. Thanks for the suggestion! Best wishes, Bertie, getUBetter Team.

Exercises are useful and well explained. However the app could use consultation from patients - presumably the people designing those programmes are professionals who already exercise & lack a beginner point of view. The exercises go up in difficulty, but change in set up (mat to chair to standing). Also the app could use a drag and drop feature to design one's exercise programme (the suggestion is 4 exercises, 1 from each module, but watching the videos takes more time than the actual exercise).

I was initially annoyed at being directed to an app instead of seeing a physiotherapist, after being referred by my GP, but once you get familiar with navigating the sections, the actual exercise demonstrations and regimes are helpful. However, I have found it glitschy. Eg when I click on 'my exercises', the screen splits and freezes. When I was initially able to access this section, it was empty, meaning it doesn't feel personalised, but the 'support modules' do offer general guidance.
