About this app

The seagull is a passerine bird of the family Estrildidae.
Also known as kiss-of-lass (Minas Gerais), common seals,
beak (Santa Catarina) and pumpkin / kiss of young woman (Espírito Santo),
pencil beak (Paraíba). It is an exotic species,
from South Africa and introduced in Brazil through slave ships in the reign of
D. Pedro I. Reintroduced in the interior of São Paulo in the second half of the nineteenth century,
must have been taken to the other states by man,
because of its reduced flight capacity, its distribution is less spontaneous than that of the sparrow.

Scientific name

Its scientific name means: (uncertain origin) Estrilda = Star;
specific name for this species of bird; and (uncertain origin) of (German / Dutch)
astrild = generic term for this particular African bird.

Features

It measures about 10.5 inches in length and weighs 7.5 grams.
Both sexes are similar,
having lower tail and black tail coverings on the male and brown in females.
Young immature people have the black beak plus a small shiny white labial commissure.
They almost lack the rippling and intense red of adult plumage.
The most prominent morphological distinctive in puppies are the protuberances
white-glowing at the base of the jaw and jaw, which reflect light,
appearing as phosphorescent in the dark interior of the nest and guiding parents for food.
These protuberances dry after the puppies leave the nest, but remain in the design of the mouth.
