About this app

Have you ever experienced that the colors of your photos does not seem to correspond to the colors of the scenes in front of you? Let this app help you to get more realistic and better looking photos!

This app is the official replacement of the classic app White Balance Color Temp Meter that has sold more than 25 000 copies around the world. This new app is much improved with calibration, real-time measurements and more.

This app measures the color temperature of the lighting so that you can set the appropriate white balance (WB) setting on your camera. You can also use it to measure the approximate Kelvin temperature on LED lamps and other light sources. The app now also supports basic green / magenta tint measurement (also known as Duv measurement). There is also a real-time calculation of what CTO, CTB, Green or Magenta filter/gel to put on your flash light to match the measured color temperature.

What is Color Temperature?
Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light that measures the hue of light from a light source. Color temperatures are usually measured in Kelvin (K). Low color temperatures (below 3000 K) are called warm colors (red and yellowish white) while high color temperatures (above 5000 K) are called cool colors (blueish white). Technically the color temperature is the temperature of an ideal black-body radiator that radiates light of comparable hue to that of the light source.

When is Color Temperature Important?
Color temperatures are of special interest in all kinds of color photography. The human eye easily compensates for the color temperature of different light sources. Most cameras today have a feature called Automatic White Balance, AWB, which tries to do the same. In some conditions this works OK, in other conditions the results are poor. Many photographers therefore prefer to manually set the white balance value on the camera to match the color temperature of the current scene. With this application you can measure the color temperature before doing the white balance setting on you camera to get a more accurate setting.

You can also use this app to learn about the color temperatures in your environment. With this knowledge you can develop a better understanding of how the color temperatures varies which helps you when you are trying to master the light and colors in your photography.

How Accurate are the Measurements?
To measure the color temperature accurately is more complex than it might appear. On an Android™ device is it complicated further by the fact that all devices are different from each other. Uncalibrated values from the app can be seen as fairly good approximations. But with the use of CALIBRATION NOW SUPPORTED in this app and a proper white surface evenly lit by the light source you are measuring, you can usually get surprisingly good accuracy.

Please note that the app currently is free to use with all of its functionality for a few weeks, then it requires a one-time fee or a subscription.

Great app used it for my C1, and got rid of the green tint through the service menu. Now i know why they say never copy anyone setting on any calibration way to many factors. How accurate is it for monitors? It seems to want more blue, and monitors have a lot of red in it for my qd-oled monitor seems like it pushes what feels like cooler temp on monitors compared to TVs.

No option to use front camera and get an overall measurement in a room. Cumbersome to not be able to hold in hand like a light meter. For example, to see what a rooms white balance is when trying to setup a calibrated work flow by using a calibrated monitor. Or when trying to see the difference between the white balance of an off site editing environment vs an onsite. Trying to view swatches and need to ensure that the white balance from light matches what my monitors white balance is set to.

I have now added front camera support based on your and others' comments. Is there anything else I can improve in the app to deserve a 5-star rating from you? Thank you so much and please feel free to write directly to me at apps@contechity.com.

Seems fairly accurate. Although I don't have another meter to compare it to, the app was able to confirm some 4000K LEDs. There's also an extra meter in tandem that senses magenta/green hue. Easy to use too, just grab a piece of paper, point and read data.
