Humanity throws away almost a billion tons of food a year, according to the UN. This means that 17% of all food in shops, households and restaurants will end up in the bin, reports the BBC. The 923 tons of food thrown away could fill 23 million 40-ton trucks! If all these trucks were lined up, their line would circle the globe seven times. And this happens every year!
Spoiled food emits 8-10% of greenhouse gases. In other words, if all food waste were collected in one state, it would be the third largest source of waste on the planet. While millions of tons of food end up in landfills, an estimated 690 million people go hungry. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the number of hungry people has increased even more.
