About this app

Henryk Sienkiewicz, a Polish writer, author of historical novels, laureate of the 1905 Nobel Prize for Literature, belonged to the constellation of prominent Polish realists of the 19th century.
In the early stories and stories presented in the proposed collection, one can see the author's interest in the themes of the extinction of patriarchal life ("The Old Servant", "Ganya") and the fate of the peasantry ("Yanko the Musician"). The latter became the most popular of Senkevich's stories in Russia: only until 1917 it was published about 40 times, and was translated by V.G. Korolenko. The story "The Lamplighter at the Lighthouse" tells about the homesickness of a Pole who had been abandoned in a foreign land and a participant in the 1830-31 uprising. In the story “Bartek the Winner,” the language of bitter satire speaks of the Germanization and mockery of a Polish peasant in the part of Poland under Prussian rule.
The themes of many of Senkevich's novels are present in the stories he wrote earlier, as "The Third" precedes novels about modernity.
