Theodore Dreiser's novel An American Tragedy, inspired by several murders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was published in November 1925.
Clyde Griffiths is a young man from a poor fanatical missionary family who is trying to get a better job in life, following the American dream. He is vain, ambitious, passionately desires to achieve a beautiful and rich life, the heights of social and material well-being. He is ready at any cost to remove the obstacle that stands in his way to wealth, luxury and a happy marriage.
In 1928, the novel was published in Russian in the seventh volume of the collected works of T. Dreiser by the Zemlya i Fabrika publishing house. We offer this translation by Zinaida Vershinina to your attention.
