Meaning of Riba

Actually, what is RIBA? The meaning of Riba is the application of interest or the addition of the loan amount when repayment is based on a certain percentage of the principal loan amount charged to the borrower.

Etymologically, the term riba comes from Arabic which means ziyadah or addition. In other words, the meaning of usury is the taking of additional assets or capital in vanity, both in buying and selling transactions and lending and borrowing.

In Islam, Riba is a practice that is forbidden. For Muslims, applying a certain percentage of interest on conventional bank loans or other financial institutions is considered a usurious practice. Understanding Riba According to Fiqh Experts

In order to better understand what usury means, we can refer to the opinions of several experts. The following is the meaning of usury according to fiqh experts:

1. Al-Mali

According to Al-Mali, the notion of usury is a contract that occurs for the exchange of certain goods or commodities whose balance according to syara' is not known, when the contract or ends the exchange of both parties or one of the two.

2. Rahman Al-Jaziri

According to Rahman Al-Jaziri, the meaning of usury is a contract that occurs with a certain exchange, it is not known whether it is the same or not according to the syara' or one of them is late.

3. Sheikh Muhammad Abduh

According to Sheikh Muhammad Abduh, the notion of usury is the additions required by the person who owns property to the person who borrows his property (the money), due to the postponement of the promise of payment by the borrower from a predetermined time.
