Description of drug problems in Indonesia, both herbal medicines (drugs derived from plants) and conventional medicines (synthetic drugs that we are familiar with in clinics and hospitals); will not be separated from the dynamics and dimensions of the long history of medicine in mainland Europe.

This is understandable because after the Dutch government left its colony of the Dutch East Indies 67 years ago, the norms and basic knowledge about medicine which were full of mainland European influence became the initial capital for pharmaceutical development in our country. In order not to forget the history of back to basics, the preparation of this textbook refers to or takes the form of quotations from primary references from Europe: Capasso, F., Gaginela, T.S., Grandolini, G., lzzo, A.A (2003) Phytotherapy, Springer-Verlag, Berlin.

The fact that herbal medicines used in phytotherapy (treatment using plant materials/dam materials) continue to exist alongside conventional medicines, requires a more adequate legal corridor so that the public is protected from harmful practices. The government as a regulator must be better able to guarantee the safety and efficacy of herbal medicines and herbal medicine practitioners are able to become hosts in their own country from exposure to the free drug market in our country.

Sometimes people are more aware of the advertising language for herbal medicines that can cure various diseases at a reasonable cost, rather than information about herbal medicines from health agencies or related institutions. It is for things like this that information on herbal medicines is needed by the public.

We hope that this book, together with the Organ System Phytotherapy book, apart from being especially useful for undergraduate, pharmacist and postgraduate pharmacy students, as well as health sciences students, will also be useful for lovers, observers and practitioners of herbal medicine.

Hopefully this reference book is useful and thank you to the various parties who have helped publish this book.
