About this app

This Android application is an explanation of the book entitled Political Shallowness by Arie Sujito. In Pdf format.

This book provides a reference for analyzing the problems that occur behind the scenes of Indonesian politics, at least from the political sociology perspective of Arie Sujito.

If we compare the period before reform, then post-reform democracy in this republic seems to be very successful. However, if we compare (hopes for) a democratic Indonesia with the current reality, this success is actually still doubtful. Because in the collective minds of the people there is still the question, what is the meaning of democracy if social justice is moving further away?

This question is very easy to understand when watching the behavior of political elites in the current noisy and sparkling democratic arena. In contrast to the fate and interests of the people which are increasingly neglected. At the same time, understanding of politics, political parties, elections and the essence of government itself has experienced an extraordinary shallowing.

Politics tends not to be seen as freedom to produce priorities for collective life, but is seen more as an opportunity or right that is inherent only as a basic principle. In the end, politics seems to be just power itself, so it is not important whether power is beneficial for the collectivity or instead becomes a terrible monster that will destroy the collectivity, as described as 'Leviathan' by Thomas Hobbes.

This phenomenon frames Arie Sujito's writings in this book. In the period from 2010 to 2012, this UGM sociologist expressed critical responses to actual events in daily life, which were then presented by the daily Republika in the regular column "Analysis" which was published every Tuesday. So that it doesn't become scattered reading, the writings were put together to make this book.
