In this book, written by someone who has direct experience of life in prison, it is clearly depicted, correctional institutions are still the same as prisons, many very inhumane cruelties still take place in them. The author of this book compares life in prison to astronauts living in outer space, very isolated, having to be totally alert to guard themselves as carefully as possible, calculating their movements from inch to inch, so as not to die horribly. In prison, a prisoner can be beaten up by both officers and prisoners, even by officers who collaborate with other prisoners.

The torture was really cruel, he was beaten so badly that he was black and blue and then he was just thrown into a pile without being given any medicine. Left to try to heal alone, or, die alone. There are also rat cells which are like a prison within a prison, namely, a special isolation place for prisoners who commit violations in prison in the form of a cramped, dirty, lack of light and damp place.

The rat cell is a prison within a prison. Just reading and imagining the filth of prison from this book, my stomach feels sick. It's really unfortunate and sorry for people who go to prison. Imagine! In Salemba prison alone, there are many outcast prisoners who don't have rooms and sleep in the open on cardboard or shabby mats. At night the water flow was cut off so that the public toilets were covered with a carpet of human waste. In another part, there is a place where the floor is flooded with a little water and also a lot of human waste. “That's disgusting, uwaaak.”

The prisoners are tortured and stressed humans, but they are helpless and no one cares. Apart from the poor and non-nutritious food rations, the variations are only the same standard menu, which tastes bland, like cat vomit. Prison overcapacity is also extremely dangerous.

Medan's Tanjung Gusta Prison, which rioted on July 11 2013, for example, was inhabited by 2,694 inmates, experiencing overpopulation of up to 237% of what it should be. In the bloody riot at Tanjung Gusta prison which killed 5 guards and the escape of around 200 inmates, including 22 terrorists, the cause could be traced to stress due to the very poor condition of the prison.

When I was a member of Commission III DPR-RI in 2006, I saw for myself the crowds of prison inmates in Pontianak Prison, West Kalimantan. There the prisoners were crowded into the room like cendol in a bowl so that not all of them could lie down even if they were sleepy. If some are lying down, the others have to sit because there is not enough floor space for everyone to lie down.
