General Linguistics is a course given to all students majoring in language and literature, both at teacher education institutions, namely IKIP and FKIP, as well as at literature faculties, with the aim of providing basic provisions to be able to take and understand subsequent language courses. Therefore, this course is usually given in the early semesters before they take other language courses. Without taking this General Linguistics course, they will certainly have difficulty taking other language courses.

The material provided in General Linguistics is the meaning, nature and structure of language in general. That is, not certain language structures, such as Javanese, Dutch or Indonesian; but rather the structure of language as a verbal communication tool that only humans have.

In Indonesian literature, there are actually a number of books that have been used, both translations from foreign languages ​​and originals from Indonesian authors. However, the presence of this book, which is more comprehensive in content because it is compiled from materials that have been used in general linguistics lectures at FPBS IKIP Jakarta, (now Jakarta State University), will likely make a significant contribution to the teaching and learning process.

To make the teaching and learning process more effective, at the end of each chapter assignments and exercises are presented, which can be done individually or together, or discussed together.
