Adultery is the greatest crime. Why not, it destroys the benefits of natural law in preserving bloodlines, protecting honor, avoiding things that are haram, even those that lead to criminal acts.

This crime can happen to your friend's wife, your own child, your own sister, or even your own mother. This clearly destroys the neighborhood order, as well as triggering a series of other crimes. It is not surprising that this issue did not escape the attention of Allah and His Messenger, it is discussed thoroughly in His Book and in the Sunnah of His Messenger.

Imam Ahmad said, "I do not know anything greater (the sin) after murder, than adultery."

Allah confirms the prohibition of the act of adultery with His words, "And those who do not worship other gods along with Allah and do not kill a soul which Allah has forbidden (to kill), except for the right (reason), and do not commit adultery. Whoever does that, he will surely receive (retribution) for his sins (from Him). (Namely) his punishment will be multiplied on the Day of Resurrection, and he will remain humiliated in his punishment. Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous deeds, then for them their evil is replaced by virtue. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (OS. Al-Furgin: 68-70).

Allah equates adultery with shirk and murder. For this act, He will reward the perpetrator with eternal torment that is doubled, and will not be saved from hell even if they have repented and done good deeds.
