About this app

This Android application is an Explanation of the Purpose of the Mizan Kubro Book by Abdul Wahhab Asy-Sya'roni. In PDF format.

Al-Mîzan al-Kubrâ is classified as a comparative fiqh work. It accommodates the opinions of muktabar schools. This is clearly seen in the preamble of the book. Asy-Sya'roni revealed: "This book is a high quality mizan (scales). Here I try to collect different arguments. Apart from that, I also try to accommodate the opinions of the mujtahids and their followers, from the first generation to the last until the Day of Judgment.”

In the book al-Mizan al-Kubra by Imam Sya'rani it is explained that the schools of fiqh are under the light of the holy shari'ah (al-shari'ah al-muthahharah). Not a single opinion of their opinions that comes out of divine guidance. That's why it's not enough just to explain through a series of words, Imam Sya'rani also explains through various pictures and charts to make it easier for readers to understand his explanation, as can be seen in the photos I have included.

From these quotations, at first glance there may be no difference with other comparative fiqh, such as Bidâyat al-Mujtahid wa Nihâyat al-Muqtashid, by Ibn Rushd. It's just that, when we read further, we will find claims from ash-Sya'roni who stated that his book was a new breakthrough that had never been done by previous scholars. So what is the basis for this claim?

The claim seems not without basis. Let's just open the early chapters of the book. There is a clear difference between this book and existing fiqh books. Asy-Sya'roni proposed a new barometer in addressing differences of opinion between schools of thought. He is no longer busy favoring one opinion and defeating the other. Asy-Sya'roni sees this difference with a different lens. Here he proposes a benchmark in the form of an aggravating law and a mitigating law.

This parameter is clearly illustrated in Asy-Sya'roni's statement: "Everything in Islamic law returns to amr (commandments) and nahi (prohibitions). According to the scholars, each of the amr and nahi is divided into laws that are departed from and laws that contain relief.

With this parameter, ash-Sya'roni consistently weighs all the differences of opinion that occur. Once again, he doesn't see one opinion as superior and the other weaker, instead, he escapes one opinion, as a light law –in case A, for example—, another opinion is a heavy opinion –in the same case.
