About this app

This Android Application is an Explanation of Consumerist Culture's Shopping Addiction in Text by Yolanda Stellarosa. In Pdf format.

The growth of the middle class in Indonesia is a positive thing. This shows an increase in the level of income and welfare of some Indonesian people. When someone "classes up" to become richer or have greater financial resources, their purchasing power will also be greater. Consumption patterns are shifting, not only to fulfill basic needs, but also to fulfill various other needs outside of basic needs, such as socializing, investing and even having to go abroad for holidays.

When consuming a product, it is often not based on need, but for example just to add to a collection (bags, shoes, clothes) or simply to increase prestige (self-esteem). So, it is no longer important whether the goods consumed are needed or not, what is important is that there is "a special pleasure" when "being able to buy", whether you have to sacrifice other primary needs or don't care if you have to go into debt (using a credit card).

Sadly, this consumerist culture is often not supported by adequate income. Expenditures are greater than income, and on the individual side they are increasingly unable to control their desire to shop. Individuals like this are, of course, one of the benchmarks for the success of capitalism. Through the mediation of mass media (advertising), they work day and night to present a false reality so that people can be encouraged to buy and continue to buy (without end).

Because it is an intermediary (capitalism), the media (mass) is not immune from criticism, because the media is able to build various certain images through watching or reading. Because of its extraordinary capabilities, the media (mass) is also considered a planting ground for the dominant ideology (capitalism). In this case, the media can act as an agent whose main task is to spread images to a wide audience.

So, the decision taken by someone to consume a product may not come from within themselves (because of a need), but because it has been influenced by the image (which is built by capitalism and spread through mass media). Therefore, the desire to shop is the result of deliberate construction, especially by the (mass) media.

Ultimately, what emerges is a consumer society, which highly glorifies the "attributes" attached to a product. Buying activity is no longer solely due to a need for the product/goods, but more because of the "attributes" attached to the product. There, what is happening is the acceptance of the simulation as “reality as it is”.
