The first part of this book will introduce aspects of the methodology of interpretation which have become experiences and treasures of knowledge about the Qur'an. The study in this chapter provides a history of the growth of tafsir from the time of the Prophet, the companions, tabiin and tabiin-tabiin to the ulama in the medieval, modern and contemporary eras.

The findings in this chapter state that the momentum for tafsir studies occurred when ulama and umara in the Islamic world showed special attention in maintaining the Prophet's Hadith as a source of law after the Qur'an. The emergence of research on the quality and quantity of the Prophet's Hadith has encouraged a more serious study of the verses of the Qur'an. So it can be said that the science of interpretation was born at the urging of the science of Hadith. This section is sharpened with a methodological description of tafsir that can be used to examine the contents of the Al-Qur'an.

Various analyzes and methodologies were presented by the commentators through theoretical interpretations of tahlili, ijmali, muqaran and maudhui. The description of the use of these methods also provides an overview of mufasir figures who have made enormous contributions to the meaning and understanding of the Qur'an who come from various regions, various religions and different eras.
