The debate between rationalists and hadith experts in measuring the role of reason in understanding religious texts has been going on for quite a long time, there is even a stigma that hadith experts reject the role of reason in understanding hadith. Ali Mustafa Yaqub (1952-2016 AD) was an Indonesian hadith expert who had a major role in the development of hadith studies in Indonesia. This research examines Ali Mustafa's rationality in understanding hadith to respond to social and political problems in Indonesia.

In detail, this research examines the method of selecting Ali Mustafa's hadith, tracing the roots and methods of understanding Ali Mustafa's hadith, as well as the influence of social and political conditions in understanding Ali Mustafa's hadith.

This research is qualitative in nature with library research using a content analysis approach using the theory of understanding hadith, the Canadian Literal theory popularized by Northrop Frye, and the theory of social influence known as symbolic interactionalism. The source of this research is the work of Ali Mustafa Yaqub, Fatwa of the Grand Imam of the Istiqlal Mosque, Contemporary Fatwas, Hajj Serving Satan, Beware of Hajj Provocateurs, Satan in a Turban Necklace, and other ideas contained in articles and mass media.

The findings of this research are that Ali Mustafa's understanding of the hadith is a rational textual and contextual understanding by considering developments in social and political conditions. This is proven from three aspects, namely the selection of hadith, the methodological roots of understanding hadith, and the influence of socio-political conditions in understanding hadith. First, in selecting hadiths, Ali Mustafa chose authentic hadiths to use as arguments, but Ali Mustafa also used daif hadiths to answer the problem of repeated Hajj which showed inconsistencies in the selection of hadiths. In selecting hadiths too, Ali Mustafa carried out a pattern of selecting and placing several hadiths on new and unique themes according to the social and political problems being faced. Second, in the methodological roots of understanding hadith, Ali Mustafa's understanding of hadith has its roots in the understanding of classical scholars who have explained these hadiths in their works.

Ali Mustafa also uses classical hadith understanding methods such as textual and contextual with historical, sociological and linguistic approaches connected to the socio-political developments faced. Third, developments in social and political conditions also greatly influence Ali Mustafa's understanding of the hadith to answer problems that occur in society.
