About this app

This Android application is an explanation of the book entitled Gus Dur Fights Through Jokes by Syu'bah Asa. In Pdf format.

Many books about Abdurrahman Wahid or books containing writings of Abdurrahman Wahid's thoughts have been published. As soon as Kial Ciganjur - who is familiarly known as Gus Dur - assumed the reins of national leadership as the fourth president of the Republic of Indonesia, publishers seemed to be competing to publish books related to Gus Dur. Of course this is encouraging, because the public is exposed to many things about the profile, thoughts and behavior of our president. This book is one of them. What differentiates it from other books is that this book is entirely the brainchild of Gus Dur which he wrote as a column in TEMPO magazine.

We do not include Gus Dur's writings in other media. There are more than a hundred columns written by the former General Chair of PB Nahdlatul Ulama. The writings are varied, starting from religious issues, profiles of Kial, socio-economics, politics, foreign affairs, even sports. The writing was so fresh, light, flowing, reflecting his broad insight. He wrote heavy problems in a light style.

Syu'bah Asa's introduction to this book explains how familiar we have been with Gus Dur since a long time ago, when this magazine's office was in the bustling market of Senen Market, Central Jakarta. At that time, Syu'bah Asa was the Managing Editor of TEMPO magazine which, among other things, was in charge of the Column column. Almost every day Gus Dur came to the TEMPO office. Of course, it wasn't always related to writing, because there was a "side job", namely picking up his wife, Shinta Nuriyah Wahid, who at that time worked at Zaman magazine, next door to the TEMPO magazine office.

When we're not writing, we just joke around with Gus Dur, from light matters to political matters. And when Gus Dur returned to his desk, which only had a typewriter and some papers on it, the conversation stopped for a moment. This collection of columns also has a foreword by Ulil Abshar-Abdalla, a young NU scholar. Ulil, who of course knew Gus Dur more closely, focused a lot on Gus Dur's Islamic boarding school, which Ulil called a Javanese Islamic student.

Now, the "Javanese students" are the first people in this republic. Meanwhile, TEMPO magazine, which was closed by the Orde Bani government for four years, has been published again and is entering its 29th year this year. So, this book is a birthday gift for TEMPO magazine for readers and anyone who wants to know and trace Gus Dur's thoughts from being a "traveling Kial" to leading the PBNU and, finally, becoming the fourth president of the Republic of Indonesia.
